The International Seminar on City, Commerce and Consumption (CCC) marks its 10th edition in 2026, also celebrating 20 years of activity of the CCC Network. Established in 2006 in Rio de Janeiro, this forum has become a leading platform for scientific reflection and interdisciplinary dialogue on the relationships between the city, commerce and consumption, bringing together geographers, urbanists, architects, planners and other researchers from across Europe and Latin America.

Over the past two decades, successive editions of the Seminar have followed the profound transformations of urban commerce and consumption, examining their conceptual, methodological, social and political implications. The work presented and discussed has resulted in a wide range of publications, reinforcing the international relevance of this research network.

Perspectives and challenges

The celebration of the Network’s 20th anniversary offers a valuable opportunity to revisit past trajectories, critically assess the approaches and methodologies employed, and set new directions for the future. Today, more than ever, there is a need to reaffirm the central role of geographical knowledge in understanding commerce and consumption within urban contexts, particularly in light of global challenges such as:

• The digitalisation and intensification of consumption through online platforms;
• Emerging forms of inequality and exclusion in access to supply, consumption and the city;
• The rise of more sustainable lifestyles and consumption practices;
• The transformation of urban atmospheres into phygital, branded, tourist-oriented and ephemeral spaces;
• New forms of urban governance and the role of different social and economic actors.

Looking ahead, the CCC Network renews its commitment to conceptually robust, methodologically innovative and socially relevant research, contributing to strengthening geographical knowledge and enhancing its impact on the understanding and management of contemporary cities.
