Documents to be submitted
PhD in Geography
- Certificates proving that the candidate holds academic degrees or other relevant diplomas attesting that the candidate meets the required access and admission qualifications;
- Updated Curriculum Vitae, with copies of relevant documents referred to therein;
- Indication of the field of knowledge in which the candidate intends to carry out the PhD;
- Motivation letter explaining the reason for choosing this cycle of studies;
- Submission of a research project, indicating the object of study, the methodology and the research goals, duly problematized based on reference bibliography in the field of knowledge to which the candidate is applying;
- Two letters of recommendation;
- Display of valid identification document or, when authorized by the applicant, a simple photocopy of the identification document;
- Other documents deemed relevant by the applicant for application purposes.
Legalization of foreign documents
Documents proving qualifications, when they have been issued by institutions in non-EU countries, they must be legalised by a Portuguese consular agent or by the Hague Apostille, with these legalizations being carried out in the country of origin of the documents. Whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, documents must be translated into one of these languages by a certified translator.

PhD in Development Studies
- Master's degree certificate or equivalent academic degree;
- Academic, scientific and/or professional curriculum vitae with copies of the documents to which it refers;
- Motivation letter specifying the objectives that motivate enrolment in this cycle of studies;
- Research project, indicating the object of study, methodology and research objectives, duly problematized based on reference bibliography in the area of study to which you are applying;
- Two letters of recommendation;
- Display of valid identification document or, when authorized by the applicant, a simple photocopy of the identification document;
- If you of not being a native of an English-speaking country, the candidate must provide proof of English skills at level B1 or higher in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages;
- Other elements considered significant for the application.

PhD in Development Studies
Numerus Clausus: 15
This PhD is lectured in English, but offers tutorials in both Portuguese and English. The PhD thesis may be written in Portuguese or English.
Students must have adequate English language skills to carry out doctoral‑level research, corresponding at least B1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

- Certificates proving that the candidate holds academic degrees or other relevant diplomas attesting that the candidate meets the required access and admission qualifications;
- Updated Curriculum Vitae, including published or properly documented works;
- Indication of the branch in which the candidate intends to carry out the PhD;
- Motivation letter explaining the reason for choosing this cycle of studies, and presenting the field to be researched and the justified objectives of the work to be carried out during the PhD programme;
- Display of valid identification document or, when authorized by the applicant, a simple photocopy of the identification document;
- Other documents deemed relevant by the applicant for application purposes.

Online Application
To make your application, you must access the Fenix system.
If you have never been a student at IGOT, you must first create your account here.
If you already have a user account in ULisboa linked to IGOT, and if you don’t remember your username or password you should go to https://utilizador.ulisboa.pt and use the Recover Password option.
- After accessing Fenix, you must select the separator Candidate Portal. Next you must create your application, choosing the regime and degree. After these steps, you must fill in the data requested in the electronic form.
- You must attach in digital format all the documents required for the application process.
- The online application will only become valid after the payment of the respective application fee.
Once the application evaluation process is completed, the ranking list will be published on the Fenix platform.
All notifications about the application process will be sent by e-mail to the e-mail address indicated as “Personal” in the application's personal information separator.
Application Fee
60,00 € (sixty euros)
The application is only considered valid after payment of the candidacy fee until the end of the application deadline of the corresponding phase. There will be no refund of this fee if the candidate is excluded or is not selected. Also, in case of withdrawal of the application, the amounts already paid will not be refunded.
